I had texted him to see how he was feeling and he said a little better, and that he was much less grumpy. I kidded him that neither of us was ever grumpy. He said he felt like a duck on a pond. Calm and still above the water but below the surface he was paddling like a mofo.

I told him that I loved him very much.

I think of all the things I wish I had said to him before he had to go. I would tell him how important he was to everyone he knew, how he lifted us up and made us want to be kinder, gentler. I would tell him that I wish we could go back in time and change every wrong move we ever made so that we always colored inside the lines. I would tell him that he didn’t need to suffer, or feel lost or alone because he could always count on me.

I wish I could tell him I hope he has peace and love and happiness forever.

And I know what he’d say. He’d say, Likewise, darlin.
