Martha Ellen (Stahl) Carine age 87 of Covington on September 4, 2016, surrounded by her family, finally got to go “bye bye”, a request she has been making for many years, to go through the dense veil of dementia to be greeted by her Savior, Jesus Christ and to be reunited with “her Joe”, Joseph Edward Carine, the love of her life and husband of 64 years who proceeded her in death on Jan. 7, 2012.  Martha was the 3rd of four children born to Harry Stahl and Edith (West) Stahl, both deceased.  Martha was born on February 22, 1929 in their home outside Fletcher.  She was named Martha because of being born on Washington's birthday.  She was a graduate of Bradford High School, Class of 1947.  Her sister, Norma Jean (Stahl) Shahan and brother John Stahl are deceased while her youngest brother, Frederick Lee (Rita) Stahl survives.  Daughters, Deborah Kay (Robert) Jess and Kathy Jo (Michael) O’Donnell and their families and friends too over as Martha’s care givers during Joe’s illness and following his death.  “Grandma Carine” doted on her first granddaughter, Jinny Jo Jess (Jim) Hale and then welcomed grandson, Lee (Brittany) Jess eight years later, quickly followed by Addine Ellen (Ray) Waldon, and finally Roger Joseph O’Donnell.  Martha made holidays very special for the family, especially Valentine’s Day, “Love Day” with the family often having pink mashed potatoes and preparing special “gift scavenger hunts” to find Valentine gifts.  Martha was a working Mom so they would be able to provide special things for the family such as a yearly vacation.  Beginning in 1955 she worked at the following locations, all in Piqua; Deckers, Orr Felt, French Oil and Hartzell Fan.  When the grandkids came along, they each got to go on special vacations each year from about age 3 through age 12 and each received an album of pictures from the vacations with captions at each picture.  These were prepared with love during years of depression that turned into dementia.  Martha is also survived by her great grandchildren that she has enjoyed watching grow; Lee and Brittany’s four children, Ellie, Kennedie, Gage and Zoie and Jinny and Jim’s daughters, Jordan and Emma.  Martha is also survived by many nieces and nephews from both her siblings and Joe’s large family.  Martha was baptized and became a member of First Presbyterian Church, Bradford when she was 12 years old and was an active member, Sunday School teacher and Elder as long as her health allowed.  Martha and Joe were Youth Fellowship Advisors for many years.  Martha and Joe were both very active members of Christian Chapter, Bradford, Order of the Eastern Star as long their health allowed, having joined in 1955.  Martha served in various offices, including Worthy Matron five times and District President.  A major highlight of Martha’s life was serving as Grand Chaplain of the State of Ohio in 1974.  She always introduced herself as “The happy Christian from Christian Chapter.”  Her laughter could be heard in a crowd of hundreds.  She was very creative and imaginative.  Christian Chapter merged with Tippecanoe Chapter in Tipp City.  Even in her dementia, she often asked if “Grandma” looked pretty and often commented on the clothes we wore around her, telling us we looked beautiful.  Martha had a beautiful voice and loved to sing having sung in her church choir and the Bradford Community Choir for many years.  Even through the fog of dementia, if she was handed a hymnal she would do her best to sing those beloved songs.  A celebration of the resurrection of life will be celebrated on Friday at 11:15 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church, Bradford with Pastor Mike Buker and Pastor Kathy O’Donnell co-officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10-11 A.M. at the church following will be and Eastern Star Memorial Service.  Interment Miami Memorial Park Cemetery, Covington.  If desired, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Bradford.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.stockerfraley.com.
