David "Dave" Irvin Hughes

David “Dave” Irvin Hughes, age 83 of Saint Marys, passed away Monday, July 24, 2023 at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton.  Dave was born in Bradford on August 24, 1939 to the (late) Irvin & Helen (Perkins) Hughes; a graduate of Bradford High School, Class of 1957; received his BS Ed, English, 1968 from Miami University of Ohio; received his Master of Arts in Education, 1974 from Eastern Kentucky University; retired as a Teacher and Coach with 37 years of service, at many schools, including Bradford, Minster, Greenville, New Madison/Tri-Village, Newcomerstown, Arcanum (all in Ohio), and Union City, Indiana; Coached football, basketball, baseball, cross country, taught English, journalism, psychology, sociology and speech; library media specialist; received National High School All American Boys Basketball team, 1957, Area boys basketball Coach of the Year, 1974; All Darke County Area High School boys basketball Coach of the Year, 1992, Associated Press Southwest District Div III boys basketball Coach of the Year, 1992, Ohio Co-Coach of the Year, 1992; Bradford Athletic Hall of Fame, 1996, and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, 2002/03, 2004/05; forever a Boston Red Sox fan; also followed the Cincinnati Reds; loved nature and sitting on his patio watching the wildlife; loved Saint Marys Lake and pontooning on it; writing was his passion and he had authored two books.  Preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Judy Hughes and Janet Stover; and two brothers, Jim Hughes and Ronnie Hughes.  Dave is survived by his fiancée, Carolyn T. Toman; his four children, Davey Hughes of Chicago, IL, Darsi & Tim Brinley of New Madison, Penny & Keith Watson of Greenville, Elizabeth “Liz” Howe of Greenville; six grandchildren, Laura Sullivan, Brad Sullivan, Tiara Brinley, Samantha and husband, Clayton McGlothin, Anderson Hughes and Isa Hughes; three sisters and brother-in-law, Debby & Bill Molinaro of New Jersey, Sharon Gilbert of Greenville, and Miriam Cain of Celina; special friend, Dennis Lemon of Greenville; numerous nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends.  Funeral Service 10:00 AM Saturday at Stocker-Fraley Funeral Home, Bradford with Pastor Dan Scalf officiating.  Interment Harris Creek Cemetery, Bradford.  Visitation 9:00 AM Saturday until time of service at the funeral home.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.stockerfraley.com.
