Jan Mottinger Obituary

Jan Alan Mottinger, age 83 of Bradford, passed away Monday, June 14, 2021 at the Brethren Retirement Community, Greenville.  Jan was born in Piqua on January 8, 1938 to the (late) William Andrew & Janis Anabel (Mohler) Mottinger; a graduate of Bradford High School, Class of 1956; a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the 101st Airborne Division 1956-59; attended classes at Edison Community College and Wittenberg University; member of Bradford Fire & Rescue Services since 1965, serving as Chief since 1991 until now; President of Miami County Fire Chiefs since 1992, a member of Miami County Communications (911) Board, member of Ohio Fire Chiefs Association, member of International Fire Chiefs Association, was a State of Ohio Certified Fire Safety Inspector for 33 years, a State of Ohio Certified Fire Service Instructor for 30 years, was President of the Central Western Firefights Association in 1983 and he was honored in 2019  “as the oldest, still active firefighter”, and past member of the Miami County Emergency Operation Center Team;  Mayor of the Village of Bradford from 1968-1976, he was 1st Vice-President of Ohio Mayors Association from 1975-76, and he created the first Village Administrator position in 1970.  Jan was elected to the position of Miami County Clerk of Courts  in 1977, where he has served as Clerk of Courts since 1977 to now; served on Ohio Clerk of Courts Executive/Legislative Board for 25 years, appointed by Governor George Voinovich to the Ohio Automated Title Board for five years;  served on the Upper Valley Medical Center Foundation Board of Trustees, where he was Vice-President from 1983 -2012, and was President of Dettmer Hospital Foundation during the merger of the Miami County Hospitals.  He served on the Miami County AAA Board 1970-2001; he helped on the campaign to pass school issue for the new Bradford school building, he was also a recipient of 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award for Distinguished Professional Achievement from the Bradford Exempted Village School District; previous jobs included Champion Paper, Champion International, and was the Comprehensive Employment Training Act Coordinator for the Department of Transportation, Sidney from 1975-76; he was a member of the Common Ground Church (formerly Bradford Church of the Brethren); a F&AM – 32nd Degree Mason; and member of the Scottish Rite – Valley of Dayton; and Shriners.  Preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 61 years, Carol Ann Mottinger, who passed away June 5, 2021; stillborn son, Patrick Alan Mottinger on July 23, 1969; sister, Vonnie Owen; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jay & Bette Johnson.  Jan is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, William & Ann Mottinger of Portland, Oregon; sister and brother-in-law, Tamara & Nolan Harrison of Troy; nieces and nephews, Sandra Owen, Jerry & Debbie Owen, Marcus Harrison, Mike Harrison, Brad & Sinead Harrison, Janice & Art Myers; brother-in-law, Gary Allen Johnson of Bradford; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jayne & John Cassidy of Columbus, OH; nieces and nephews by marriage, Cindy & Jeremy Baird, Chad Johnson, D.J. & Ping Perkins; and other relatives and many friends.  Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM Friday at the Bradford High School Gym.  Interment at Miami Memorial Park Cemetery, Covington with Military Honors provided by the Veteran Elite Tribute Squad.  Visitation will be 4-8 PM Thursday at the Bradford High School Gym.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bradford Fire & Rescue Department.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.stockerfraley.com.  In Jan’s words, “I have served the community of Bradford, the County of Miami, the State of Ohio, and the United States of America since graduation from Bradford Schools in 1956.”  What a legacy!
