THE STORY OF WATERBUGS AND DRAGONFLIES
A group of waterbugs lived at the bottom of a pond and everyday they scurried around doing their jobs. They could not understand why every once in a while one of them would go over to a lily stalk, climb up, and not come back. So, they got together and made a promise, “The next one of us that climbs the lily stalk, has to come back and tell us what is on the other side.”
One day, this waterbug got the urge to climb the lily stalk. It went over, climbed up the lily stalk and fell on a lily pad. It was not sure exactly what happened or how long it was there, but it woke up, wiggled around, and realized it had a long tail and four beautiful wings. It had become a dragonfly! It could fly! It flew up in the air and then landed on a lily pad. It looked down in the pond and saw all of its waterbug family and friends and remembered the promise. So, it flew high in the sky and dove down only to hit the water. It could not go back through the water.
As the beautiful dragonfly sat there watching its waterbug family and friends from its new world, it realized, “I can’t keep my promise and go back and tell them what is on the other side, but you know what, they wouldn’t know me in my new body anyway!”
