Donald Lee Knapp, age 67 of Covington, passed away Thursday, June 2, 2016 at the Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy.  Don was born in Troy on January 15, 1949 to the (late) Edward and Marie (Oburn) Knapp.  Preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Cedric and Emma Palsgrove.  Don is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marilyn (Palsgrove) Knapp; his daughter, Donna E. Knapp (David Wickman); grandsons, Westyn and Kyle Wickman, all of Troy; two brothers, Walter (Cathy) Knapp, Ralph (Kitty) Knapp, all of Troy; sister, Cathy (Paul) Staton of Troy; sister-in-law, Carolyn (Palsgrove) Clem of Circle Hill; nieces, nephews, and caring friends.  Don graduated in 1969 from Covington High School where he played basketball and excelled in track.  He enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a Staff Sergeant in Vietnam.  He was in charge of maintenance for 25 years at Vemco Products, which later became Stanley Automotive Door Openers.  It was from there he began installing and repairing garage doors and openers.  In 1999, he began working for the Miami County Highway Dept. and retired from there in May of 2016.  Don was a member of the Covington Church of the Brethren, Covington VFW Post #4235, and Covington Eagles Aerie #3998.  Don's passion was his membership with the Covington Rescue Squad for 43 years.  He was one of the founding members in 1973, and served as past Chief and as Lt. of maintenance.  He truly was devoted to serving the Covington community and surrounding area.  The members were family to him.  He was also a member of the Covington Fire Department, where he held the offices of Trustee and Lieutenant, before retiring after 43 years.  Don was also a member of the Covington Police Auxiliary in 1973 and 1974.  He served the Covington Athletic Dept. for 40+ years on the football field and as a line marker (chains).  Funeral service will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday at the Bridges-Stocker-Fraley Funeral Home, Covington with Pastor John Shelton officiating.  Interment with military honors by the Veteran Elite Tribute Squad and Last Call Service at Highland Cemetery, Covington.  The family will receive friends 4-8 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.  If you so choose, donations can be made to the Covington Fire and Rescue Dept., 1000 Dick Minnich Dr., Covington, OH 45318.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.stockerfraley.com.  Not only was Don a member of the Fire Department and Rescue Squad for over 40 years, he was a good friend who unselfishly gave of himself all the time.  Whether he worked on your garage door or wiring an electrical box he always had time to help anyone in need.  Thank you Don for the memories.
